A One-to-One Interview
Tetsuro Shimaguchi, the Samurai Artist KAMUI who directed the choreography in KILL BILL
It is a sunny morning in Manchester as I wait for my much-anticipated online interview with Mr Tetsuro Shimaguchi. He enters the Zoom call at the exact arranged time wearing an informal Men’s Kimono. He sits on a tatami mat in his training room, welcoming me with a big and warm smile, making me feel at ease.
A week before our interview, I was invited by HYPER JAPAN in London to attend his online lecture. The session started with a dramatic samurai performance by Shimaguchi, as if we were watching “Kill Bill”. He is a world-renowned Samurai Artist and has a very busy working schedule. I am very excited to have a private and exclusive interview with him assisted by HYPER JAPAN.
His major accomplishments in his career are performing as Crazy 88ʼ s “MIKI”, as well as directing the sword choreography in “KILL BILL Vol.1”, directed by Quentin Tarantino. His samurai sword performance group KAMUI, performed in high-profile venues in the U.S., Italy, Poland, Russia, Dubai, Europe, and more.
His work is unique. KAMUI has extended to many other countries including Italy, Poland, the U.S. and Republic of Lithuania. He prefers to be called a “Samurai Artist”, pursuing a style of beauty of form, acting, and martial arts mixed together.
I am intrigued to find out what gives him the drive and how he chose this path, and how he met Mr Quentin Tarantino…
